First Day of Class

On the first day of class, write your name and section number on the board. Take roll and obtain the names and student id numbers of anyone not on the roll. Students may have added the class since you printed the roll. However, you cannot add or drop anyone to/from the class. Students add and drop through ISIS.

You will also need to hand out the syllabus and spend some time going over course policies, textbooks, expectations, major assignments, teaching philosophy, etc. Describing the course goals will take a fair amount of time; reviewing the syllabus in some detail is the best way for students to determine what the course is like.

It's also helpful to have your students start an activity the first day. You could have them write autobiographical information or do an "ice-breaker" activity such as break them into pairs to interview each other and introduce their partner to the class.
