Fall Orientation

Professional development for instructors is an especially important aspect of a vigorous academic unit.  In the UWP, professional development begins with a fall orientation to the program, courses, and university.

During the two weeks prior to the fall semester, guests speakers and course coordinators discuss topics in their areas of expertise to the whole group of new instructors. Break-out sessions for teachers of specific courses focus on course-level concerns. Topics include

Teaching Methods
Syllabus Development
Course Goals
Library Instruction
Use of Technology
Developing Assignments
UF Students and Resources
First Class and First Week
Appointments, Personnel, and Payroll

Fall orientation is just the first step. Following this two-week introduction, a variety of initiatives help to support new instructors in a year-long preparation:

  • A mentoring program supports MA and MFA candidates
  • Fall and spring practica address day-to-day teaching concerns of all new instructors
  • Spring and Summer workshops prepare teachers to take on new courses mid-year
  • Regular teaching circles orient teachers to weekly activities in ENC 3254
