Instructor's Guide
Fall Orientation
Professional development for instructors is an especially important
aspect of a vigorous academic unit. In the UWP, professional
development begins with a fall orientation to the program, courses, and
university.
During the two weeks prior to the fall semester, guests speakers and
course coordinators discuss topics in their areas of expertise to the
whole group of new instructors. Break-out sessions for teachers of
specific courses focus on course-level concerns. Topics include

Fall orientation is just the first step. Following this two-week
introduction, a variety of initiatives help to support new instructors
in a year-long preparation:
- A mentoring program supports MA and MFA candidates
- Fall and spring practica address day-to-day teaching concerns of
all new instructors
- Spring and Summer workshops prepare teachers to take on new courses mid-year
- Regular teaching circles orient teachers to weekly activities in ENC 3254
